Kogi State Governor, Ahmed Usman Ododo, has ordered the immediate evacuation of Kogi State students studying at University of Jos following the disruption of academic activities due to security concerns in Plateau State.
The directive came after authorities of the institution asked students to vacate hostels and the campus amid growing fears over safety in parts of the state.
The decision, according to the Kogi State Government, was taken as a proactive step to safeguard the lives of Kogi indigenes studying in Jos, where recent violent attacks have reportedly claimed several lives and heightened tension within the community.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Special Adviser on Media, Ismaila Isah, Governor Ododo said the safety and wellbeing of Kogi students remain paramount to his administration.
He explained that students are particularly vulnerable during periods of crisis, especially those living off-campus or in areas with limited security presence, hence the urgent intervention by the state government.
The governor disclosed that the Special Adviser on Youth and Students Matters, Hon. Oladele Nihi, has been deployed alongside a government delegation that has already arrived in Jos to coordinate the evacuation process.
According to him, arrangements have been completed to transport the students safely back to Kogi State under adequate security, in collaboration with relevant authorities.
Governor Ododo also commended the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and security agencies working to restore peace in Plateau State.
He expressed confidence that ongoing security operations would bring the perpetrators of the recent violence to justice and restore calm in affected communities.
The governor further reassured parents and guardians that the state government remains committed to the safety and welfare of Kogi students, urging them to remain calm and cooperate with officials coordinating the evacuation.
Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to protecting the lives and property of Kogi citizens both within and outside the state, noting that the government will continue to monitor developments in Jos and take further actions where necessary.
