NDC Raises Alarm Over ADC Leadership Ruling, Fears Threat to 2027 Opposition Participation

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has warned that the Federal High Court judgment nullifying the leadership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), led by David Mark, could undermine opposition participation and weaken Nigeria’s multi-party democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The National Publicity Secretary of the NDC, Osa Director, Esq., raised the concern in a statement issued by the party, cautioning the judiciary against actions that could create the impression that the courts were being used to weaken opposition parties.

The party said although it recognised the judiciary as the last hope of the common man, judgments capable of affecting the political standing of opposition parties must be handled with caution to protect democratic principles.

It expressed concern that the manner in which some High Court judgments were being delivered could create uncertainty around the ADC’s participation in the forthcoming general elections.

According to the NDC, such developments could further shrink the space for multi-party democracy, which it said was already facing serious challenges under the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The party therefore urged the judiciary to protect its independence, impartiality and integrity, warning against any situation that could undermine public confidence in the judicial system.

It also called on the ADC to immediately appeal the judgment, urging the appellate court to grant an accelerated hearing to ensure that the matter was resolved before the 2027 general elections.

The NDC said a prolonged legal uncertainty could affect democratic participation and potentially create obstacles for opposition parties seeking to participate in the electoral process.

It added that the protection of political plurality and the right of opposition parties to participate in elections remained essential to sustaining democracy in Nigeria.

The party concluded with its declaration that a new Nigeria was possible.
