The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has recorded a major boost in Bayelsa State following the defection of grassroots mobiliser, Doubara Kumokou, popularly known as the “Youth Governor,” alongside thousands of his supporters.
Kumokou, a kinsman of the Bayelsa State governor, formally announced his decision to join the NDC at the party’s state secretariat in Yenagoa, in what observers describe as a significant development in the state’s evolving political landscape.
Addressing party members and supporters during the event, Kumokou expressed appreciation to the National Leader of the NDC, Henry Seriake Dickson, for his enduring influence in shaping the political direction of the state.
He noted that Dickson’s leadership had played a key role in elevating his kinsman to the governorship, describing the former governor as a political figure whose contributions had benefited many families and communities across Bayelsa.
Explaining the reason for his defection, Kumokou said the decision was driven by what he described as the credible leadership and consistent performance of Dickson in various public offices.
According to him, the NDC represents a political platform built on integrity, purposeful governance and people-focused policies.
“I and my supporters have carefully followed the leadership direction of the NDC and we are convinced that this is the right political family to align with. We are fully committed to the ideals of the party and will work tirelessly to advance its vision in Bayelsa State,” Kumokou declared.
In a statement issued by the NDC Bayelsa State New Media Director, Gabriel Ukuta, the development was described as part of a growing wave of political realignments in the state.
The statement noted that the party was increasingly positioning itself as a formidable force capable of challenging established political structures in Bayelsa.
Receiving the defectors, the Bayelsa State Chairman of the NDC, Dauperebo Ikuromo, welcomed Kumokou and his supporters, describing their decision as both timely and strategic.
He said the defection reflects a broader shift in the political consciousness of Bayelsans and the growing confidence of the people in the NDC’s vision for governance.
“The Nigeria Democratic Congress is fast becoming the heartbeat of Bayelsa politics. This defection is not just symbolic; it reflects the growing trust of the people in our vision and commitment to service,” Ikuromo stated.
The state chairman assured the new members of full integration into the party’s structure and reiterated the NDC’s commitment to delivering responsive leadership that prioritises the welfare and aspirations of the people.
He also hinted that more prominent political figures and groups are expected to join the party in the coming days as the momentum continues to build.
Political observers say the entry of Kumokou, who commands a strong grassroots following across several communities, could significantly influence political calculations in the state ahead of future elections.
