The Commissioner for Special Duties in Bayelsa West, Hon. Michael Magbisa, has resigned from his position and defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), citing lack of ideology and internal party control as reasons for his decision.
Magbisa, a former Local Government Chairman, formally announced his defection on Wednesday at the NDC State Secretariat in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital.
Addressing party members and supporters at the event, he said his decision followed deep dissatisfaction with the internal operations of the APC, which he accused of stifling the political growth and aspirations of its members.
“Today, I am leaving the APC because I don’t like their ideology. This isn’t a party but a place where destinies and people’s lives are destroyed,” he said.
He also announced his resignation as commissioner, stating that the decision was final.
“I formally resign as a commissioner, and there is no going back because I didn’t forget or miss anything,” Magbisa added.
According to him, his defection to the NDC was accompanied by a coalition of about 5,000 supporters drawn from civil society groups and members of various political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC and the Labour Party (LP).
Magbisa said the group was inspired by the leadership style of the party’s national leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, adding that they believed in the vision of the NDC.
“Nobody should be deceived anymore. The future of the NDC is bright, and that is why we are here to work together and make it count,” he said.
He further claimed that many politicians across parties were already considering joining the NDC, noting that the new party, though less than three months old, was gaining momentum nationwide.
Magbisa alleged that some public servants had their salaries stopped due to their perceived support for the party but assured them that the issue would soon be addressed.
Receiving the defectors, the Bayelsa State Chairman of the NDC, Hon. Dauprebo Ikuromo, described the development as a major boost for the party.
Ikuromo said the NDC remained a credible alternative platform for Nigerians seeking a new political direction, adding that the party was open to individuals from all backgrounds.
He praised Magbisa for what he described as courage and conviction in taking a political stand.
“I commend Magbisa who has taken the courage to join a cause he believes in. He has shown courage and conviction and has demonstrated that politics should be guided by principles, not personal gains,” Ikuromo said.
The state chairman also expressed appreciation to the leader and founder of the party for what he described as transparent leadership that has continued to attract supporters across the country.
