The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to international peace and security, paying tribute to United Nations peacekeepers and calling for greater investments in peacebuilding amid evolving global threats.
Speaking as the world marked the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the police chief honoured the memory of peacekeepers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving under the UN flag, describing their courage and dedication as a lasting inspiration in the pursuit of a safer and more peaceful world.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the IGP highlighted Nigeria’s long-standing record in global peace support operations, noting that personnel of the Nigeria Police Force have distinguished themselves in several United Nations, African Union and regional peace missions.
According to him, Nigerian police officers deployed to conflict-affected regions have consistently demonstrated professionalism, expertise and commitment, further strengthening the country’s reputation as a dependable partner in promoting international peace and stability.
Reflecting on this year’s theme, “Invest in Peace,” IGP Disu stressed that addressing emerging security threats requires sustained investment in peacebuilding, institutional strengthening, technology, capacity development and international cooperation.
He observed that terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber-enabled offences, communal conflicts and violent extremism continue to pose complex challenges that demand innovative and collaborative responses.
The police chief underscored the need to equip peacekeepers with modern skills, advanced training and adequate operational resources to effectively confront contemporary security threats.
He also acknowledged the significant contributions of female peacekeepers, advocating increased participation and leadership opportunities for women in peace operations.
While commending the sacrifices made by peacekeepers and their families, IGP Disu reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening its peacekeeping capabilities and supporting initiatives aimed at advancing global peace, security and stability.
He maintained that the Force would continue to prioritise professionalism, capacity development and strategic partnerships in line with its role as one of Africa’s foremost contributors to international peacekeeping efforts.
