Members of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Integrity Group in Benue South Senatorial District have announced their support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The group made its position known on Friday during a courtesy visit to Senator Moro, explaining that its decision was based on what it described as the need to promote effective representation and advance the interests of Benue South.
Led by its Zonal Coordinator, Hon. Yakubu Audu, the group said it would support Senator Moro of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the Benue South senatorial election, despite belonging to the NDC.
Audu said the decision was informed by Senator Moro’s experience in the National Assembly and his current position as Senate Minority Leader.
He said the group believes that retaining an experienced voice for Benue South in the Senate would serve the interests of the district.
According to him, the group was therefore prepared to work across party lines as part of what it described as an electoral coalition for the 2027 elections.
The State Coordinator of the group, Hon. Emmanuel Orih, said the arrangement also aligns with the emerging strategic alliance in Benue State associated with Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume.
Orih said the group had chosen President Tinubu as its preferred presidential candidate while backing Senator Moro for the senatorial election.
He explained that the group was considering the candidates separately, rather than allowing party affiliation alone to determine its choice.
Responding, Senator Moro thanked the group for what he described as its consideration of the interests of Benue South above partisan considerations.
Moro said political alliances could bring together people from different parties where they shared common interests and objectives.
He also cited ongoing federal road projects, including the Abuja-Keffi-Makurdi road, as part of the reasons he believes voters should assess the performance of candidates alongside campaign promises.
On the governorship election, Moro urged the group to apply what he described as the same consideration of performance and representation when assessing candidates.
He also criticised the administration of Governor Hyacinth Alia over what he described as inadequate attention to Benue South, while stressing that his criticism was directed at the state government and not the Tiv people.
Moro said minority status should not prevent people from seeking meaningful political representation and participation in governance.
