The former National Woman Leader of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Hon. Kayauta Yakubu, has defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC), formally joining the ruling party at a ceremony held on Tuesday at the APC National Secretariat in Abuja.
Yakubu was received by the APC National Woman Leader, Dr. Mary Alile-Idele, alongside her supporters and political associates. Also in attendance was the APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim.
Speaking on behalf of the APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, Alile-Idele welcomed Yakubu’s defection, describing the APC as “a growing and forward-moving political platform” that remains open to Nigerians willing to contribute to national development.
She said the party’s expanding membership reflects public confidence in its leadership and policies, and commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration for reforms, infrastructure development, empowerment initiatives, and the introduction of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which she said has expanded access to higher education for youths.
Alile-Idele described Yakubu’s move as a significant boost to the party, noting her influence among women and grassroots supporters, and urged her to immediately begin mobilising for future elections.
In her remarks, Yakubu said her decision to leave the ADC was based on her assessment of governance and development under the APC-led administration. The Kuje-born politician from Rubochi Ward, Federal Capital Territory, said she joined the party voluntarily to contribute to national growth and grassroots political development.
She said she was impressed by progress in security and development, adding that she felt her political aspirations would be better realised within the APC. Yakubu also recalled her earlier role in the party during its formation, describing her return as a “homecoming.”
Also speaking, the APC Chairman for Kuje Area Council, Alhaji Adamu Danladi Ibrahim, described Yakubu as a founding member with proven mobilisation capacity, expressing confidence that her return would strengthen the party ahead of forthcoming Area Council elections.
He said the party expects her to galvanise support and contribute significantly to its electoral prospects in the Federal Capital Territory.
