The National Democratic Congress (NDC), Imo State chapter, has held its first inaugural meeting of the State Executive Committee in Owerri, unveiling plans to intensify grassroots mobilisation and membership registration across the state.
Speaking during the well-attended meeting on Tuesday, the Imo State Chairman of the party, Reginald Uwakwe, said the newly registered party had already begun active mobilisation barely two months after its official registration.
Uwakwe explained that the party had launched an online membership registration drive and urged members to mobilise people in their various wards to join the party.
- “Our party was officially registered barely two months ago, and we have already hit the ground running,” he said. “We are embarking on a massive membership drive through the party’s online registration portal, and we are encouraging people to register and become part of this new political movement.”
He added that prospective members would need either a National Identity Number (NIN) card or a voter’s card to complete the registration process.
The state chairman further revealed that the national leadership of the National Democratic Congress had directed each ward to register at least 300 members, urging party officers to print registration forms and share the online registration link with residents in their communities.
“Our national leadership has directed that every ward should register at least 300 members,” Uwakwe stated. “We are encouraging officers to print the forms and circulate the registration links widely so that people in every ward can easily sign up.”
To strengthen the mobilisation effort, he disclosed that two key committees — a Contact and Mobilisation Committee and a Finance Committee — would be set up immediately in line with directives from the party’s national leadership.
Uwakwe called on members of the party in Imo State to work diligently to ensure the success of the membership drive and expand the party’s presence across the state.
Also speaking at the meeting, the South-East National Vice Chairman of the party, Tedy Obey, stressed the need for all party officers to register through the NDC online portal while mobilising others to do the same.
“The leadership of the party in Abuja has emphasised the importance of effective mobilisation, especially among women and youths,” he said. “All officers and leaders must take responsibility for ensuring that people in their communities register through the party’s online platform.”
Obey encouraged the interim state officers to remain committed to building the party, assuring them that their efforts would eventually yield positive results.
“The reward for your hard work will come by the grace of God,” he added.
In her remarks, the State Woman Leader, Uche Judith Ngozi, expressed optimism about the party’s future, noting that the calibre of people joining the party was a positive sign.
“I am very satisfied with the calibre of people we have in this party,” she said. “With my experience in politics, I will contribute my best to ensure the growth and success of the party in Imo State.”
Meanwhile, Uwakwe disclosed that the party leadership was working to ensure that functional structures were established at the ward, local government and zonal levels to strengthen the party’s organisation across the state.
