Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West Senatorial District, has defended his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), attributing his decision to the lingering internal crisis within the opposition party and expressing strong support for the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
Ngwu spoke with journalists after his letter of defection was formally read on the floor of the Senate on Wednesday, explaining that the move had already taken place earlier and the announcement during plenary was mainly to formally document it in the Senate’s proceedings.
He said the prolonged leadership disputes and factional divisions within the PDP created uncertainty about the party’s future and made it difficult for members to operate effectively.
“With the factions in the party and court cases, including matters now before the Supreme Court, there is a lot of uncertainty. When things are not clear and you are thinking about political survival, you have to look for another platform. To continue to stay where the direction is not certain becomes difficult for any serious politician,” Ngwu said.
The senator noted that his decision to join the APC was also influenced by what he described as the reform-driven policies of the current administration, which he said demonstrate clear commitment to repositioning the country’s economy.
“The President took a bold step from day one by removing the fuel subsidy, something previous governments avoided because it was difficult. It has not been easy for Nigerians, but it is a necessary decision that will bring long-term prosperity and stabilise the economy,” he stated.
Ngwu also pointed to other initiatives of the administration, including infrastructure development and the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), which provides students with interest-free loans to support their education.
“You also see improvements in infrastructure, new projects across the country, the student loan scheme that allows young Nigerians to study and pay later, tax reforms and regional development initiatives. These are policies that show the government is taking steps to move the country forward,” he added.
The lawmaker expressed confidence in his political future within the APC, recalling that during the 2023 general elections he emerged as the only PDP senatorial candidate from the South-East who won his seat.
According to him, although the economic reforms introduced by the current administration may take time to deliver full benefits, they remain necessary steps toward stabilising Nigeria’s economy and ensuring sustainable growth.
