The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has criticised Senator Orji Uzor Kalu over his recent remarks on the state of Nigeria’s economy and the relevance of opposition parties in the country.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday, the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson, Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, said the comments credited to Orji Uzor Kalu praising the economic policies of Bola Ahmed Tinubu and suggesting that opposition parties were no longer viable were misleading and failed to reflect the realities faced by Nigerians.
According to the party, the current economic situation marked by rising inflation, unemployment, weak foreign direct investment and business closures contradicts claims that the government’s economic policies are delivering positive outcomes.
The NDC argued that Nigerians continue to grapple with worsening economic hardship, citing high interest rates, declining industrial activity, security challenges and a growing debt burden as indicators that the economy remains under severe strain.
The party also dismissed suggestions that opposition parties were “dead,” insisting that consultations were ongoing among political actors to build a broad coalition capable of challenging the ruling party in future elections.
It added that opposition groups were mobilising citizens across the country and engaging stakeholders to strengthen democratic participation and offer Nigerians an alternative political platform.
The NDC further urged Senator Kalu to “speak truth to power” and reflect the concerns of ordinary Nigerians rather than defend policies that, according to the party, have deepened economic hardship.
The statement maintained that credible economic performance indicators should be presented to justify claims of progress, stressing that transparency and accountability remain essential to restoring public confidence in governance.
