The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has urged the country’s U-17 women’s national football team, the Flamingos, to secure victory in Saturday’s FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup final against Japan, describing their impressive run as a source of hope and joy for millions of Nigerians.

The party said the team’s historic qualification for the final had given Nigerians a reason to celebrate despite the economic hardship and challenges facing the country.

The NDC National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, Esq., made the remarks in a statement congratulating the Flamingos on their achievement, following their emphatic 3-1 victory over Brazil in the semi-final.

Director praised the players for their resilience and determination, noting that they had overcome an opening 2-1 defeat to Poland to establish themselves as serious contenders for the title.

He described their journey to the final as impressive, recalling their 3-1 victory over two-time champions, North Korea, in the group stage, which ended the Asian side’s eight-year unbeaten run in the competition.

The Flamingos subsequently defeated Mexico 2-1 in the Round of 16, edged Venezuela 1-0 in the quarter-finals and produced a commanding 3-1 performance against Brazil to secure their place in the final.

According to him, the team’s victories have brought moments of happiness to Nigerians who, he said, have been weighed down by hunger, poverty and the policies of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

“You did our country proud. Your victories have lifted Nigerians from the hunger, poverty and sadness that the ruinous policies of the ruling party have imposed on them,” he said.

With Japan standing between the Flamingos and the historic trophy, the NDC spokesman urged the players to remain focused, maintain their winning mentality and bring the cup home.

He assured the team of the party’s support, adding that Nigerians were united behind them as they prepared for the decisive encounter.

The statement concluded with the party’s political message, declaring that “a new Nigeria is possible with NDC.”
