The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has clarified its position on speculations surrounding the possible defection of Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, stating that no definitive decision has been reached while reaffirming its commitment to an open and inclusive political platform.
In an explanatory press release issued on May 2, 2026, the party emphasized that it has not foreclosed the possibility of welcoming new members from across the political spectrum, but maintained that any discussion regarding high-profile defections remains within the realm of probability, not certainty.
“The NDC has not foreclosed the defections of the duo of Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Mr. Peter Gregory Obi and others,” the statement read, adding that “such possibilities remain within the realm of probability rather than certainty.”
Reaffirming its stance, the party stressed its longstanding policy of openness, noting that it does not coerce or pre-determine political alignments.
“We do not foreclose nor coerce defection scenarios to favour our party, as we believe politicians are free to move to any party of their choosing,” the statement added.
The NDC further disclosed that consultations with key stakeholders across party lines—including members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition blocs—are ongoing as part of efforts to build a formidable alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.
“While discussions with key opposition leaders are ongoing, the hierarchy of the party shall continue to keep its doors open for whoever wishes to join the fold to salvage the nation,” it stated.
Despite the ongoing engagements, the party made it clear that no specific defection has been finalised, including those involving Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso and Peter Obi.
The NDC assured Nigerians of its readiness to provide a credible and inclusive political platform anchored on its core ideologies as it positions itself for the 2027 polls.
