Amid worsening economic hardship, insecurity, and widespread dissatisfaction across the country, the Nigeria Democratic Congress has continued to position itself as a rescue platform, drawing fresh strength from the defection of four prominent political figures into its fold.
At a high-level gathering of party leaders and supporters, the NDC formally received former member of the House of Representatives, Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma; former National Vice Chairman (South) of the Peoples Redemption Party, Babatunde Francis Alli; former Vice Chancellor of Taraba State University and NNPP governorship candidate, Muhammad Sani Yahaya, alongside their supporters.
Speaking at the event, Agbonayinma painted a grim picture of the nation’s condition, describing Nigeria as “bleeding” and in urgent need of decisive intervention.
He said his return to the country after years abroad was driven by patriotism and a commitment to national recovery.
“I have come back because of the love I have for this country… Nigeria is sick. The NDC is the chosen platform to rescue Nigeria,” he declared.
In his remarks, Babatunde Alli pledged loyalty to the party, describing its constitution and structure as forward-looking and ideologically grounded. He noted that his decision to join the NDC was deliberate, driven by his belief in disciplined grassroots leadership and national transformation.
Similarly, Professor Sani Yahaya expressed confidence in the party’s growing influence, stating that the NDC has evolved into a strong national movement capable of mobilizing support across all levels.
Welcoming the defectors, the party’s National Leader, Seriake Dickson, described them as experienced political actors whose contributions would bolster the party’s expansion and electoral prospects.
He noted that the influx of such figures reflects a growing national acceptance of the party’s ideology and direction.
“The fact that leaders of this calibre are identifying with us shows that the NDC is on the right path and increasingly becoming a rallying point for Nigerians seeking genuine change,” he said.
The National Chairman, Moses Cleopas, emphasized unity and discipline, cautioning new entrants to align with the party’s values and avoid internal discord.
He stressed that the party’s strength lies in collective responsibility and respect for its established structures.
“This is a family built on shared ideals. Everyone coming in must be ready to learn, contribute, and work within the system to achieve our common goal,” Cleopas added.
“Make up your mind if you are coming. Make up your mind if you are not coming,” Cleopas said, stressing the importance of commitment and shared vision.
The development signals a growing shift in Nigeria’s political landscape, as the NDC continues to attract influential figures positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of future elections..
