The Crime Correspondents Association of Nigeria (CCAN) has lauded the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, for what it described as a remarkable start to his tenure, expressing confidence in his assurance that schoolchildren recently abducted in Oyo State will be rescued safely.
The association, while assessing the police chief’s first 100 days in office, said his commitment to ensuring the safe return of the abducted pupils reflects the professionalism, operational capacity, and intelligence-driven policing approach that have characterized his administration since assuming office.
In a statement jointly signed by CCAN Chairman, Festus Fifen, and Secretary, Peter Irehe, to mark the Inspector-General’s 100th day in office on June 12, 2026, the association said the assurance has rekindled hope among affected families and reassured Nigerians of the Police Force’s determination to protect lives and combat criminality.
According to the group, the confidence displayed by the IGP over the fate of the abducted children is rooted in the successes already recorded under his leadership in tackling kidnapping, terrorism, banditry, armed robbery, cultism, and other violent crimes across the country.
The association noted that at a period of widespread concern over the safety of the pupils, the police chief’s declaration that the children would be rescued unharmed demonstrated faith in the capabilities of officers and operatives currently working to secure their release.
CCAN further stated that the Nigeria Police Force has witnessed significant improvements within the last 100 days through enhanced intelligence gathering, strategic security operations, stronger community engagement, and increased transparency and accountability.
It highlighted the arrest of hundreds of suspected criminals, including kidnappers, armed robbers, cultists, terrorists, and murder suspects, as well as the rescue of at least 277 kidnapping victims in various operations carried out nationwide during the period under review.
Describing the first 100 days of the current police leadership as a defining phase for the Force, the association said the period has been marked by purposeful leadership, professionalism, and a clear vision aimed at strengthening national security and rebuilding public confidence in law enforcement.
The crime correspondents also commended the Inspector-General’s efforts to reform and reposition the Nigeria Police Force through citizen-focused initiatives and modern policing strategies designed to improve service delivery and public trust.
According to the association, the renewed emphasis on intelligence-led policing, strategic crime prevention, and public engagement is gradually changing public perception of the Force and reinforcing its role as a partner in national security.
CCAN observed that under the present leadership, there has been noticeable progress in police-community relations, with greater responsiveness to distress calls, improved communication channels, and a stronger commitment to professionalism and accountability among personnel.
While congratulating the Inspector-General on the milestones recorded so far, the association urged him to sustain ongoing reforms, deepen institutional professionalism, and intensify efforts against criminal elements across the country.
The group also pledged its continued support for initiatives aimed at combating crime and strengthening public safety, expressing optimism that the achievements recorded within the first 100 days represent only the beginning of a broader transformation agenda for the Nigeria Police Force.
CCAN wished the police chief continued wisdom, good health, and the courage to pursue reforms that would further entrench accountability, professionalism, and people-oriented policing in Nigeria.
