The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has urged leaders and members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South to mobilise the highest number of votes for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio gave the charge on Wednesday at the APC South-South Zonal Congress held in Asaba, Delta State, where governors and party leaders from across the region gathered to elect a new zonal executive for the party.
The Senate President thanked President Tinubu and the APC leadership for recognising the South-South geopolitical zone, noting that it had been about 45 years since the region last produced a Senate President under the late Joseph Wayas.
He said the APC had demonstrated goodwill towards the zone, adding that the people of the region had reciprocated by increasingly embracing the party.
Akpabio recalled that during the 2023 elections, the APC had only one governor in the South-South, the governor of Cross River State, but noted that the party had since expanded its influence across the region.
“Now that we are united and focused, the real question is: what quantum of votes will the South-South deliver to the APC in 2027?” he asked.
Encouraging party members to remain confident of victory, Akpabio said the region must aim to produce the highest number of votes among Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones for President Tinubu’s re-election.
“You cannot be escorted by lions and be afraid of goats. The South-South must not come last. With one of our own as Senate President, the region is now fully recognised,” he said.
Earlier in his remarks, the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, who hosted the event, described the congress as a major step toward strengthening the party’s unity in the region.
According to him, the gathering signified a renewed commitment by APC leaders in the South-South to consolidate party structures and deepen grassroots mobilisation.
“Today is not just another political gathering; it is a declaration that the APC in the South-South is united, organised and ready for the future,” Oborevwori said.
He added that the zone remains strategically important to Nigeria’s political landscape and called on party members to strengthen their presence in wards, local governments and communities.
The highlight of the congress was the emergence of a new APC South-South Zonal Executive through consensus, with Victor Giadom re-elected as the party’s National Vice Chairman for the zone.
Other members of the executive include Ita Udosen (Zonal Secretary), Safugha Newword (Legal Adviser), Samuel Nwanosike (Publicity Secretary), Koyoyo Uhrorho (Youth Leader), Sodangwuo Omoni (Women Leader), Edward Ajang (Organising Secretary), and Ayo Peter Olowojoba (Leader, People Living with Disabilities).
Party leaders at the congress expressed optimism that the renewed unity within the South-South APC would strengthen the party’s performance in future elections, particularly the 2027 presidential poll.
