The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all officers and personnel of the Nigeria Police Force to immediately cease unauthorised social media activities that could undermine the integrity, professionalism, and public image of the Force.
The directive was contained in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Anietie Okokon Edem Iniedu, who said the order followed growing concerns over the increasing trend of police qpersonnel creating and sharing videos, conducting live social media sessions, and engaging in other online activities while in uniform or in situations that identify them as members of the Nigeria Police Force without official authorisation.
According to the statement, the IGP acknowledged the importance of social media as a tool for communication and public engagement but stressed that its use by serving officers must be guided by existing laws, regulations, and the Nigeria Police Force Social Media Policy.
He warned that police personnel are prohibited from creating or sharing unauthorised content in uniform, publicly commenting on official police matters, disclosing sensitive operational information, or using their status as police officers for personal promotion, entertainment, or commercial purposes.
To ensure strict compliance, the Inspector-General directed Commissioners of Police, Heads of Departments, Commanders, and other supervisory officers across the country to sensitise officers under their jurisdiction and enforce adherence to the directive.
The statement noted that supervisory officers would be held accountable for any failure to take appropriate action against personnel found violating the regulations within their commands.
As part of efforts to strengthen enforcement, the IGP also tasked the Force Intelligence Department (FID) and the Professional Standards Department (X-Squad) with intensifying the monitoring of social media platforms to identify officers engaged in activities that fall short of the professional standards expected of members of the Force.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to discipline, professionalism, and responsible public communication, Disu assured Nigerians that the Force remains dedicated to maintaining public trust and protecting its institutional integrity.
