The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has called for deeper collaboration among security and law enforcement agencies to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against cybercrime and other technology-driven offences.
The call was disclosed by the Director of the Nigeria Police Force National Cybercrime Center (NPF-NCCC), Akaninyene Ezima, while receiving members of the Joint Case Team on Cybercrime during a familiarisation visit to the centre’s headquarters in Abuja.
According to Ezima, the police chief emphasised the importance of coordinated action among institutions responsible for investigating and prosecuting cyber-related crimes, noting that the evolving nature of digital threats requires a unified national and international response.
The Joint Case Team on Cybercrime comprises representatives from key government institutions including the Office of the National Security Adviser, Federal Ministry of Justice (Nigeria), Nigeria Police Force, National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons, and the Nigeria Financial Intelligence Unit.
Speaking during the visit, the team leader, Jamila Akaaga Ade, reaffirmed the group’s readiness to work closely with the NPF-NCCC in addressing cybercrime threats.
Ade noted that the team remains committed to strengthening investigations and ensuring effective prosecution of cybercriminals through cooperation among agencies and the use of international legal frameworks.
The Joint Case Team is specifically mandated to investigate cybercrime cases cutting across participating agencies, while also facilitating coordinated legal processes that enable the swift prosecution of offenders both within and outside Nigeria.
Security experts say the collaboration is expected to improve intelligence sharing, enhance investigations, and reinforce Nigeria’s response to the growing challenge of cybercrime in the digital age.
