The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed claims circulating on social media that the party is lobbying specific individuals or groups to contest elections on its platform, describing the reports as false and misleading.
In a statement issued by the party’s National Secretary, Ikenna Morgan Enekweizu, the NDC said the allegations originated from a rogue account on X (formerly Twitter) that impersonates the party’s verified handle.
Enekweizu explained that the account, which mimics the party’s colours, logo and branding, has previously been flagged by the party as fake. He stressed that posts from the account do not represent the official position of the NDC.
The party urged Nigerians, particularly members of the media, to verify information through its official and verified X handle before publishing or sharing such claims.
While distancing the party from the parody account, the NDC noted that the platform might be operated either by an enthusiastic supporter or another individual, but insisted that its contents should not be treated as official communication.
Despite the controversy, the party expressed appreciation for what it described as the overwhelming support it has received from Nigerians within a few weeks of its emergence as a political party.
The NDC also extended an open invitation to Nigerians who are interested in political participation and democratic development to join the party and contest elections under its platform.
According to the statement, the call is particularly directed at women and persons with disabilities, as part of the party’s commitment to inclusiveness and equal participation in the political process.
The party reiterated that it remains an ideological platform dedicated to the service of Nigeria and its citizens, urging Nigerians at home and abroad to register and contribute to its growth.
“NDC is a party for all Nigerians committed to positive change and the advancement of multi-party democracy,” the statement added.
