The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has commenced its maiden party congresses across the country, setting the stage for its first National Convention scheduled to hold on May 9, 2026, in Abuja.
This was disclosed in a statement issued by the party’s Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Ohiare Abdulsalam, who confirmed that the nationwide exercise began on Thursday, May 1, 2026.
According to the timetable released by the party, ward and polling unit congresses are slated for May 1 and 2, while Local Government Congresses will take place on Monday, May 4. Zonal Congresses are expected to follow on May 6.
The statement noted that the series of congresses will culminate in the party’s maiden National Convention in Abuja, where accredited delegates, party faithful, and officials are expected to converge.
The party added that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to monitor and observe the convention in line with provisions of the Electoral Act, while security agencies have been notified to ensure adequate safety for participants and guests.
It further stated that party leaders and officials at both state and national levels have been mandated to adhere strictly to guidelines and timelines to guarantee a smooth and credible process.
“With the benefit of hindsight, state and national officers are expected to carry out their delegated responsibilities in line with the party’s constitution and approved timetable,” the statement said.
On logistics and coordination, the party leadership assured that necessary arrangements have been concluded to facilitate a seamless and hitch-free exercise nationwide.
The NDC expressed confidence that the congresses and the forthcoming convention would strengthen its internal democratic structures and position the party for greater political engagement ahead of future elections.
