National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, has called on Nigerians to safeguard the nation’s democratic gains and support the reform agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the country marks Democracy Day.
In a statement issued on Thursday to commemorate June 12, Professor Yilwatda described the date as a defining moment in Nigeria’s democratic history, symbolising the sacrifices, courage and determination of patriots who fought for justice, electoral integrity and the sovereignty of the Nigerian people.
According to him, Democracy Day goes beyond a public holiday, serving as a reminder of Nigeria’s collective struggle for freedom, representative governance and the right of citizens to choose their leaders through democratic processes.
“Democracy Day is not merely another public holiday; it is a solemn reminder of our collective struggle for freedom, representative government, and the right of every Nigerian to determine the destiny of our nation through democratic means,” he stated.
The APC chairman noted that the annual observance offers Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on the country’s democratic progress and renew their commitment to protecting institutions that sustain constitutional governance.
He stressed that democracy has created avenues for peaceful political participation, accountability in governance, protection of fundamental rights and active citizen involvement in nation-building.
Professor Yilwatda urged political leaders, civil society groups, the media, religious organisations, youth groups and other stakeholders to continue promoting dialogue, tolerance, adherence to the rule of law and peaceful participation in the democratic process.
He further appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast in supporting the economic and institutional reforms being implemented by President Tinubu, saying such measures are necessary to reposition the country for sustainable development.
According to him, the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda is aimed at achieving economic stability, accelerating infrastructure development, improving social welfare, attracting investment and creating greater opportunities for future generations.
The APC National Chairman maintained that ongoing reforms across key sectors are designed to strengthen public institutions, create jobs, improve the business environment and build a more competitive and inclusive economy.
While acknowledging that reforms may require patience and sacrifice, he expressed confidence that the policies would ultimately yield long-term benefits for Nigerians.
Yilwatda also cautioned against actions capable of undermining democratic stability, urging citizens to reject violence, division and misinformation.
“Our greatest tribute to the heroes of June 12 is to preserve the democracy they fought for and work together to build a peaceful, prosperous and united Nigeria for generations yet unborn,” he said.
The APC chairman wished Nigerians a peaceful Democracy Day celebration and reaffirmed the ruling party’s commitment to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity and supporting policies that advance the country’s progress and prosperity.
